Dr. Roy B. Coffey, M.D., 80, Port Charlotte, died May 6, 2004. He was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., and came to Port Charlotte in 1985 when he retired after 30 years in private practice as an orthopedic surgeon. He and his wife, Louise, owned Coffey House Bed and Breakfast in Port Charlotte. He retired as an Air Force lieutenant colonel. In the Air Force, he served at Nouasseur Air Force Base, French Morocco, where he was chief of orthopaedic surgery and chief of professional services at the 7280th USAF Hospital. He was also orthopaedic consultant for the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, and orthopaedic consultant to Schilling Air Force Base. He was later an attending orthopaedic surgeon at Asbury Hospital and St. John's Hospital, both in Salina, Kan. He graduated from New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, the University of Kansas and its medical school. He was fellow emeritus of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, fellow and past president of the International College of Surgeons and a member of Charlotte Harbor Chapter American Legion Post 103 and Elk's Lodge 2606, both of Punta Gorda. Survivors also include daughters Diane Sullivan of Salina and Gail Kelling of Springfield, Mo.; sons Frank and Charles, both of Colorado, Lee Phillips of Port Charlotte and Gary Phillips of Missouri; a sister, Joanne Ramph of Kansas; six grandchildren; and a great grandchild. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, with a service to follow, at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home, Punta Gorda. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, with military honors by the MacDill Air Force Base honor guard.
