Birth: unknown
County Donegal, Ireland
Death: 1900
County Donegal, Ireland

Seamus Gallagher was my great grandfather, born on the homestead Casheloogary, County Donegal.

Seamus' parents were Michael Gallagher born 1782 (Ballyshannon, County Donegal) and Catherine McDaid. Born 1786 (Casheloogary, County Donegal).

Death was in Casheloogary. "(Casheloogary)-Irish-English (Castle O'Gary)" Quote: Kathleen Gallagher Schmook my cousin.

"Ruins of the Castle were in McDaid's Lane- home of Catherine McDaid.)" Quote: Kathleen Gallagher Schmook daughter of Uncle Hughie."

Michael farmed Casheloogary (from 1825 Tithe Allotment List.)

Seamus farmed in Casheloogary. (From 1847-1864 Griffith Evaluation.) Buried Frosses.

Quote Uncle Hughie 1982:
" Michael and Seumas, farmed next to each other at one time. Later, his son, Seumas, my grandfather, owned all of that land. We were all raised there." "I stayed on the land, so it came to me when my father James died. I wanted it to go to another Gallagher when I retired, but my sons were in England and all of my brother's sons were in America." "I was able to keep it in the family, though, I sold it to Liam Keeney, he's a Sweeney relative from my mother's side."

Quote: Uncle Frank Gallagher:
"My grandfather, Seumas, lived with us when I was very young. He spoke only Gaelic and was quite gruff. He was old and prepared for death. I remember going into his bedroom and seeing his coffin standing in the corner."

Email from Monica Dignam Balkema who just visited this last June 2009.

Cashelogary is just now a wide spot in an unpaved lane. It seems to consist primarily now of sheep fields but the house from which your father and my grandfather emerged is a poignant ruins at the end of ‘Gallagher's Lane", a name that the current owner a man by the name of Peter seems to continue to use.

Dear Ancestor,
Your tombstone stands among the rest, neglected and alone The name, the date, are chiseled out, in weather beaten stone. It reaches out for all to see, it is too late to mourn. You did not know I would exist, you died and I was born. Yet each of us are part of you, in flesh, in blood, in bone, And in my breast there beats a pulse entirely not my own. Dear ancestor, the space you left those many years ago Is filled today by all of us, who would have loved you so. I wonder if you laughed and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this place and come to visit you.
