Partial letter from Elizabeth Pearson Williams Mason to her sister Nancy Pearson Ballard concerning the last days of their mother's life.
My Dear Sister,
After years delay from many hindering causes too tedious to mention I have seated myself to drop you a few lines as I am alone it is a heavy task for me to write a letter these days but I thought I would try once being that war a spared moments of God's mercy dear sister I have no news of interest to communicate to you more than our relations are all well so far as I know except our dear aged mother. She is on her death bed I fear she has been down five weeks this morning she went out soon in the morning they say she could not tell why she went out so early before any of the family had arose from bed and fell and hurt her hip it seemed to be only the flesh but she is still helpless and her mind has almost left her...I visit her as often as I can and stay with her as much as I can and minister to her many wants O she feels so near and dear to me it will be hard with me to give her up I do not enjoy much peace since she has been sick but do not doubt my loss will be her Eternal everlasting gain. . .
