Mrs Elmer Cleveland Clement Of Fresno Dies Of Long Illness

Mrs Ethel Stansell Clement, 89, long-time church and community leader, died in Collingsworth General Hospital at 11:00 a m Saturday, September 28, after a long illness. She had lived on the same farm in the Fresno community since coming here 60 years ago.

Mrs Clement shared with her husband, not only their work as farm leaders in the area, but in work for developing the educational and religious life of the community.

She was the former Ethel Stansell and was born in Fannin County October 21, the daughter of Robert W and Sally Stansell. She and Mr Clement, who also grew up in the same county, were married November 21, 1906 and,the following year, they moved to Oklaunion, east of Vernon. They farmed in Wilbarger County until they came here.

Mrs Clement was a charter member of the Baptist Church at Oklaunion and with Mr Clement, helped to organize a Baptist Church at Fresno, where the family worshiped a number of years. When rural churches of the county began to decline the family came to First Baptist Church where Mrs Clement worked in many capacities.

The couple worked for improvements of the school at Fresno, to help make it one of the outstanding rural schools of the county. Neverless, they were among the first to see the advantages of consolidation and to urge that this step be taken.

Funeral services were conducted at First Baptist Church Monday, September 30, at 2:00 pm. Officiating were the Rev Roy Collins, pastor, and the Rev Russell Pogue of Spearman, a former pastor.

Burial was in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Kelso Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Carthel Lewis, John E Forbis, J B Killian, Buddy Carter, Luther Sullivan and Claude Groves.

Surviving Mrs Clement are two daughters, Miss Inez Clement and Miss Mabel Clement; two sons, Stansell Clement of Lamesa and Eli Clement of Mineral Wells one brother, Eli Stansell of Dallas; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
