The Wellington Leader July 19, 1945

Mrs. M. A. Barton, a beloved resident of this county since childhood, died Saturday, July 14, 1945 as a result of a gunshot wound received it her home north of Wellington between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. Charged in connection with her death is Carl Ray Dearing, age 16, who was arrested by local officers in the business section Saturday evening shortly before 7:00 o'clock. Sheriff Claude McKinney said that the boy made a statement to County Attorney Morgan Tucker admitting that he fired the shot, and that charges of murder were filed Sunday morning. He is the son of Mrs. Calvin Bush. District Attorney Sam Hamilton said that Dearing probably would be tried in juvenile court. Sheriff McKinncy reported that a bullet from a .22 pump gun entered Mrs. Barton's back near the left shoulder and lodged beneath the skin just below her right collar bone. After being hit, she attempted to reach her husband, who was plowing in a nearby field and was found by him approximately 125 yards from their home. Mrs. Barton was a member of one of this county's outstanding early-day families. Before her marriage she was Miss Lora Olive Litchfield, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Litchfield. She was born in Wise County August 31, 1903, and at the time of her death she was 51 years old. Forty four years ago she came to this county with her family, and continued to make this her home. She was married to Mr. Barton approximately 25 years ago, and since then, she has taken an active interest in the life of this community.
Of a serene and gentle nature, much of her time was devoted to helping others, and her friends recall the many little kindnesses that were part of her life and that gave her as much happiness as those for whom the acts were done. Although she was in ill health for several years, she never lost the cheerfulness that was so characteristic of her. For many years she had been active in church work in Wellington. Mrs. Barton is survived by her husband, M. A. Barton; six brothers and sisters: Charles Litchfield of Wichita Falls, E. P. Litchfield of Sherman, W. A. Litchfield of Iowa Park, W. L. Litchfield of McLean, Mrs. Mae Chambers of Roswell, N. M., and Mrs. Ruby Pior of Colorado. Surviving half brothers and sisters are Rollen Litchfield, Wayne Litchfield, Nolan Litchfield and Erma Lee Litchfield of Wynnewood, Okla.
