Nordine Adele Leary was the daughter of Emma Francis Freeman (1888-1966) and Warren Henry Leary (1883-1942).

Nordine attended Santa Rosa High School and graduated from San Leandro High School in 1944. She then attended the University of California at Berkeley, California.

She married Charles Wade "Bud" Hillard (1925-1990) on May 26, 1949 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. Bud was the son of Hazel Margaret Wade (1900-1972) and Charles Richardson Hillard (1899-1967). No issue.

After they were married, Nordine attended Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, California, where she studied Geology.

They lived at 2188 Bodega Road, Sebastopol, California, in the post adobe home constructed by Bud's father, from 1962 until 1981.

In December 1981, they moved to the property they had purchased in 1965 near Buds father's new home in Etna, California. They designed and constructed a home. The home was "U" shaped and designed around a large atrium in the center as Nordine enjoyed the gardening of both flowers and vegetables. She was very active in the Scott Valley Garden Club.

In his earlier years, Bud loved to fish for steelhead, but in his later years he was forced to restrain his physical activity. He enjoyed tying flies for Nordine who would then fish for steelhead in the Scott River and in the local lakes for trout.

Bill Cushman, who was in charge of Nordine's estate, came up with the idea of creating a memorial for Nordine. He collected images and stories from Nordine prior to her death, with her permission for the purpose of preserving Etna history and the hope that the Garden Club would carry on or at least be an inspiration to others. His wonderful web page, "Remembering the Scott Valley Garden Club", shows the actives of the Garden Club over the years.

Obituary from the Siskiyou Daily News, January 15, 2010

Nordine Adele (Leary) Hillard of Etna passed away peacefully at Madrone Hospice House in Yreka on Dec. 8, 2009 surrounded by many who dearly loved and cherished her. She was 82 years young.

Nordine was born to Emma Frances (Freeman) Leary and Warren Henry Leary on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1927 in Santa Rosa, Calif. She was raised largely in Santa Rosa and went to school there until moving to Southern California to complete high school, where she graduated from San Leandro High in 1944. Nordine went to the University of California in Berkeley for two years and then left to attend business school in the Bay Area, where she graduated in 1947.

Working in San Francisco, she met Charles Wade "Bud" Hillard and they were married on May 26, 1949. Bud was a businessman and at one time had a Ford Agency, where they both worked until retirement. Working for 30 years, Nordine was also in business and banking; her employers included American Trust and Wells Fargo. Around 1980, Nordine and Bud moved up to Etna, where they had a beautiful home on 200 Patterson Creek Road with an impressive garden created by Nordine.

In approximately 1995, after Bud's death, Nordine moved into the town of Etna; she had built her special house on Frederick Street, where she was able to continue her gardening. Nordine was an exceptionally bright and active person, and she was always involved, helping with projects and organizations. In her prime, Nordine didn't sit down much and she accomplished a good deal for all her groups.

For 20 years she was Girl Scout cookie chairman and her garage was always filled with stacks of cookies during the cookie sale fundraisers. She was very active in her garden clubs, the Scott Valley Garden Club and the North American Rock Garden Society of Shasta Chapter. She was in the Friends of the Library groups of both the Etna and Yreka branches of Siskiyou County Library, and she was instrumental in the building of the impressive new Etna Library branch facility.

For years, Nordine was a dedicated volunteer at both the Etna and Yreka branches of the library. One of Nordine's proudest accomplishments was the founding of the Siskiyou County Library Vestal Foundation; she was a board member and an officer from its inception and she felt it was a genuinely solid and important way to support the county library system. As a longtime member of United Methodist Women, Nordine offered her home church, the United Methodist Church of Etna, her constant assistance and devotion.

An entertaining and always interested personality, in addition to her beloved gardening, Nordine loved jigsaw puzzles; New York Times and Wall Street Journal crossword puzzles (which she did with a pen); classical music, particularly Mozart's piano and violin concertos; reading, especially a good gritty mystery; Jeopardy; and, of course, chocolate. She has been known to play in pinochle tournaments and she was always a devoted stock market junkie.

She will be missed by her two surviving sisters, (Barbara) Jean Mosier of Castro Valley, Calif. and Wilma Von Bargen of Santa Rosa, Calif.; her nieces, Martha Jory, Cindy Wrubl, Jacque Von Bargen, Denise Von Bargen Kinghorn and Juliana Majewski; her nephews, Tim Mosier, Mark Mosier and Gerald Von Bargen; and an abundance of cherished and cherishing friends, especially Michele Estrada, who will remember Nordine's loving grace and feisty intelligence with warmth and a smile of the heart.

Nordine was predeceased by her parents, Emma and Warren Leary; her husband Charles Wade "Bud" Hillard; her sister Verna Leary Beaton; and two brothers, Grandville Elwood Leary and Warren Henry Leary.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the following charities, or to one of your choice: Friends of the Yreka Library, 719 Fourth St., Yreka, CA 96097; Friends of the Etna Library, P.O. Box 130, Etna, CA 96027; United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 70, Etna, CA 96027; or the Siskiyou County Library Vestal Foundation, P.O. Box 117, Yreka, CA 96097.

There will be a memorial service for Nordine at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, 137 Diggles Road in Etna.

At Nordine's specific request, there will be a luncheon served at 11:30 a.m. in the church hall, following the service. Come and join the community in celebrating Nordine's life. She would be pleased.
