Oscar Ben Phillips passed away Jan. 20, 1994 in Fortuna at the age of 77. He was a resident of Rio Dell.

Born in Crafton, Texas, Mr. Phillips came to California in 1937 where he lived in Marysville until joining the United States Army in 1941. He later returned to Marysville after his discharge from the Army in 1946. He came to Humboldt County in 1947 where he lived in Fortuna and Scotia and finally making his home in Rio Dell.

During his enlistment in the United States Army, Mr. Phillips received many decorations and citations which include the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and also was a recipient of the Silver Star.

He also worked for the Pacific Lumber Co. for 35 years before his retirement in 1982.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors, working on cars and doing various types of woodworking.

He is survived by his wife Jean Phillips of Rio Dell; sons Grant Phillips and his wife Debbie of Salem, Ore., and Doyle Phillips and his wife Margaret of McKinleyville; daughters Jeanie Speir and her husband Paul of Rio Dell and Janie Moore and her husband Dan, also of Rio Dell; his grandchildren Michelle Phillips of Sacramento, Melanie Phillips of Fortuna, Ben Phillips, Jared Phillips and Tony Phillips of Salem, Ore., Michael Phillips of Byron, Genevie Phillips and Jessica Phillips of McKinleyville, Angelique Speir and Cody Speir of Rio Dell. He is also survived by his great granddaughter Leesa Phillips of Fortuna and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his son Gary Phillips.

Friends are invited to attend services Monday, Jan. 24, 1994 at 2 p.m. at Goble's Chapel Fortuna with Pastor Darrell Kenworthy officiating.

Casketbearers will be Calvin Elliott, Steve Hart, Jim Barsanti, Red Elliot, Monte Lowe and Tom Cook.

Concluding services will be at Sunrise Cemetery in Fortuna.

Arrangements are under the direction of Goble's Chapel Fortuna where friends my call Monday at 9 a.m.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to General Hospital Rehabilitation Center, 2200 Harrison Ave., Eureka 95501.
