| Birth: | Oct. 26, 1859 | | Death: | Jul. 5, 1909 |  Hall of Fame Baseball Manager. Born in Amherst, New Hampshire, he was one of the most successful field managers in the history of the National League. For sixteen seasons 1890 to 1905, he managed the Boston Beaneaters and the Chicago Cubs. Known as an impeccable judge of talent and an adept handler of players, he was the architect of the Cubs' famous double play combination, Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance. In 1892 and 1898, his Boston teams were the first ever to win over 100 games in the major leagues. He ended his career with a record of 1284 wins, 862 losses and a .599 winning percentage. He died of tuberculosis at age 49 in Denver, Colorado and was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee in 1999. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
