Lorain mayor killed, wife hurt in crash

Amherst Twp.- Lorain Mayor Joseph Zahorec, whose tenure in office spanned 9 years, was killed this morning in a two-car accident on Middle Ridge Road, just north of the Route 2 overpass.

Zahorec, 64, was a passenger in a car driven by his wife Helen. Their 1984 Cougar was struck head-on about 7:30 a.m.by a pick-up truck, which went out of control on ice as it came off the section of road which goes over Route 2.

He was flown by helicopter to Lorain Community Hospital, where an hour-long effort to revive him failed. He was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m.

Zahorec of Lorain, reportedly was enroute for treatment at the Cleveland Clinic, where he was a cancer patient.

Mrs. Zahorec, 62, was in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Lorain St. Joseph Hospital with multiple head cuts, trauma and possible head and internal injuries, according to a hospital spokesman.

The driver of the other vehicle, William Yancar, 39, of Vermilion also was listed in serious condition in intensive care at Lorain Community Hospital with multiple trauma and possible head injuries.

According to the Highway Patrol, Yancar exited eastbound off Route 2 and turned left, heading north on Middle Ridge Road. He apparently lost control of his Mazda pickup truck on a patch of ice on the highway overpass and started spinning.

His truck crossed over into the southbound lanes, slamming head-on into the Zahorec car.

Both Zahorecs apparently hit the front windshield in the impact, their car bouncing into the guardrail on the right side of the road, the Highway Patrol said.

Yancar was thrown from his truck through the driver's door;

County Corner Dr. William E. Kishman wasa to rule on the cause of Zahorec's death.
