Capt George Vancouver
Birth: Jun. 22, 1757
Kings Lynn
Norfolk, England
Death: May 12, 1798
Petersham

Explorer. Born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, he began his nautical career in 1772, when appointed to a position under Captain James Cook sailing the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. In 1790 as a Captain, he was chosen to represent England to make an extensive exploration for any river or passage the might connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. As pilot of the flagship Discovery, he discovered Puget Sound, explored the mainland of British Columbia, Port Discovery, Mount Rainier, Port Orchard, Whidbey Island, Vashon Island, Hood Canal and was the first European to explore the inner waters of Burrard Inlet. On return to England in failing health in 1792, he prepared his journals for publication that he had discovered a navigable river. He retired to Petersham, on the outskirts of London where lived until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
