In Finchford Cemetery in Blackhawk Co, IA there is a headstone that has both John and his first wife's names and dates.

In Riverside Shell Rock Cemetery there is a headstone only for John's 2nd wife, Elizabeth "Betsy". Because she was not the mother of his children, and she died before John, I believe they buried him with their mother, Ruth (Main) Hamilton in Finchford Cem.

JOHN HAMILTON DEAD.
Was Old and Respected Resident of this Community.

John Hamilton, an old and highly respected resident of this locality, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Homer Sewell, last Sunday, his demise being due to the infirmities of advanced years. He was aged 91 years 1 month and 10 days.
The decedent was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, May 26, 1822 and came to Iowa in 1851. From that time until his death he resided continuously in Shell Rock and vicinity.
The deceased is survived by the following children: Micajah Hamilton, Topeka, Kas; Geo. Hamilton, Allison; Mrs. Mary Sewell, Shell Rock; Mrs. Bessie Hoth.
Early in life Mr. Hamilton identified himself with the church and throughout the remainder of his days he led a consistent Christian life.
The deceased was a good citizen in all that the term implies and will long be remembered by Shell Rock people as a kind neighbor and a friend to all in time of trouble or adversity.
Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. John Dawson preaching the sermon. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery*.

We were confused by that also, so went to Finchford the last time we were in Iowa a few of years ago. We got to see the cemetery records and Ruth Main Hamilton was buried there, but couldn't find a record for John. It's a very old book and the early pages are terribly fragile. There is a modern stone for the two of them (Row 7, Lot 7, Grave 36) with dates. In Riverside Cemetery there is a stone for John with no dates right next to his sister-in-law, Lucinda Main Graham. Trouble is we didn't' know this was part of the Main bunch until much later and we've never been back there.
So, what I wonder is this: He died at his daughter, Mary Jane's house and she was from the first marriage, but there was also the daughter from the 2nd. Could there have been a disagreement on where to bury him and the latter daughter had the last word. If so, the first family might have wanted to show their father with their mother and so had the stone made or the two of them in Finchford after John's death. No proof of this, simply an idea I've had. The stone in Finchford has to be from the first family. Perhaps when John's stone in Riverside was never finished by the 2nd family dau. it was then that the stone in Finchford came into being.
