In 1778 John Duvall subscribed to the oath of allegiance to the new government. He is said to have been a captain of the Guards at the surrender of Cornwallis in the Rev. War.
John, his wife, Anarpy, five sons and two daughters were migrating from Maryland to Kentucky when he drowned while crossing the Potomac River.
However, in "Marylanders to Kentucky" by Peden, Miles (John Miles) Duvall was a privateer in the Revolutionary War and afterwards a coast trader supposedly killed by pirates in 1787.
