He graduated from Georgetown University when he was only eighteen years of age with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. His father, a founder and one of the first professors of medicine of that institution, then sent him to the University of Virginia (UVA) for post-graduate work in chemistry, since he was considered too young to begin the practice of medicine. At UVA he was taught by one of his uncles, Henry Howard.
Howard's interest in medicine apparently waned however, and in 1874 he received another degree from Georgetown University, this time the Bachelor of Laws. He then practiced law in Baltimore for about five years. In 1881, he began the practice of law in the city of St. Paul, Minnesota.
He died in that city and his body was taken to his old home in Washington, D.C. for burial. Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, of which he was one of the original six founding brothers while at UVA, later furnished a bronze plaque to mark his resting place.
Story on his death appeared in the Minneapolis Tribune, 2 December 1899, p.9 col. 4. "Death Was A Passenger. Robertson Howard, Well Known St. Paul Attorney, Dies in a Carriage While Being Taken From His Home to the Hospital"
