Eugene "Gene" C. Ploense, 81, of Bloomington died Thursday (March 4, 2010) at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal.

He was born Oct. 1, 1928 in Bloomington to Harry and Bertha Woodburn Ploense. He married Betty J. Ditchen on Jan. 16, 1954 in Bloomington. She died June 4, 2007.

He is survived by a daughter, Gayle (Rick) Heckelman of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Samantha Ploense, Christina (Troy) Campbell and Nicholas and Kasey Heckelman; three great-grandchildren, Joey and Matthew Ploense and Makayla Campbell; mother-in-law, Bernice Ditchen of Bloomington; brother-in-law, Don Seiler and sister-in-law, Betty Miller.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Ploense; two brothers, Bud and Jerry Ploense and a sister, Beverly Seiler.

He retired from the Bloomington Fire Department as assistant chief in 1984 after almost 29 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
