Born the only child of Admiral Joseph Strauss and Mary Sweitzer. He was married twice, first to Lydia Archbold, three children, and then to Beatrice Phillips, one child.
Graduated from Annapolis in June 1923. Spent much of his early Naval career at sea but in December 1941, he was assigned to the staff of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, Chief of Combined Operations located in London. He was promoted to Captain in 1943, and served on the staff of British Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay in preparation for the "D" Day Landings in August 1945. Awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V".
