Craig was born and raised in Rural Valley, Pennsylvania. After graduating from dental school at the University of Pittsburgh, he went into practice in Rural Valley with his father George, who was also a dentist.
In 1940 he married the cute little music teacher he had fallen in love with, Esther ("Pat") Freyermuth.
Craig joined the Naval Reserve's dental corps as a lieutenant during World War II. In 1946, he was separated from the Navy but, having seen the world (or at least part of it) he wanted to rejoin. In 1947 he was re-accepted into the regular Navy.
Craig served on two ships - the Pittsburgh and the Boise - during his career and on many naval bases. Undoubtedly his favorite duty assignment was London, which gave Pat and him the opportunity to travel all over Europe.
Craig died on active duty in 1966 at Lakehurst (New Jersey) Naval Air Station, where he headed the dental clinic.
