Major General

US Army General. He graduated from West Point in 1884. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, he initially served at posts in the western United States. During the Spanish-American War he served in the Philippines, and from 1903 to 1904 he was Military Governor of the province of Cavite. During World War I Shanks was promoted to Major General and initially commanded the Port of Hoboken, responsible for coordinating the transport of soldiers to France. From September to November 1918 he commanded the 16th Infantry Division at Camp Kearny, California in preparation to lead it in combat, but the war ended before the division deployed. In 1921 Shanks was a pallbearer for the interment of the American Unknown Soldier of World War I. In 1925 he performed a similar duty at the funeral of President Warren Harding. Shanks retired to Washington, DC in 1925, and his awards included both the Army and Navy Distinguished Service Medals. He was the author of a book on leadership, 1914's "Management of the American Soldier," and a Korean War US Navy troop carrier was named for him.
