Michael was a Jack-of-all-trades. During his life he worked as a farmer, keeper of the county poor farm, miller, night watchman, and sheep rancher. He lived almost his entire life in the Finger Lake area of New York and frequently moved, eventually settling in Elmira, NY.
The exception was a few years in Montana where two of his daughters had moved with their husbands to start sheep ranches and his son Charles had moved as a miller.
He and his wife Eliza Jane had five children: Phoebe Marion, Isadora Norton, Sarah Alida, Caroline Gordon, and Charles Rowley.
