Washington, April 4 (AP) -- Brig. Gen. Frank T. Hines, retired, who headed the government's veterans affairs activities almost 22 � years -- longer than any other man -- died Sunday. He would have been 81 years old next Monday.
A son, Frank T. Hines Jr., Monday said his father had suffered a stroke 10 years ago but continued some business activity until recently.
The general suffered a fall and entered the Mount Alto Veterans hospital here two weeks ago, the son said. The hospital listed the cause of death as bronchial pneumonia.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Fort Myer chapel, in nearby Arlington , Va. Interment will follow in Arlington National cemetery.
Hines was chosen by President Harding to head the veterans bureau in 1923.
When the Veterans administration succeeded the veterans bureau in 1930, Hines became the first administrator and served until Aug. 15, 1945.
Hines was born in Salt Lake City, April 11, 1879. He started his military career as a private in the national guard He served in the Spanish-American war and World War I.
After he left the VA in 1945, Hines was ambassador to Panama until 1948.
