| Birth: | Jan. 9, 1840 | | Death: | Sep. 1, 1924 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, United States Army General. He had one of the most remarkable American military careers. He begin it at the outbreak of the Civil War as a mere Private in the 12th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was later appointed Captain, and rose to Colonel, being brevetted Brigadier General. Commissioned as an officer in the Regular Army after the war, he fought in the Indian conflicts in the West, and became a Major General in the Spanish-American War. He was promoted to Lieutenant General and named the first United States Army Chief of Staff in 1904. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
