"Robert Horlock was born in Mobile, Alabama, Jan 5, 1849. His father, John Horlock, was born in England, at Gravesend, on the Thames, of a ship building family. He came to Mobile and established a ship chandler business, selling supplies to ships. In 1860, the family moved to Galveston, TX, and established a ship chandler business there. His shop was one of the few that stayed open during the period of the Civil War, 1861-1865, but sustained serious losses. After the war, he returned to England, taking his family with him and opened a store in Liverpool. They returned to Galveston in early 1868 and John died shortly after, on March 12. His son Robert, my great grandfather, moved to Navasota and established himself in numerous businesses and built what is now called Horlock House and serves as the Grimes County Museum and Historical Center."

"John Horlock was born in England in 1812 and came to America in 1840 to settle in Mobile, AL, where he reared a large family. He moved to Galveston in 1860 but returned to Liverpool in 1865 and then came back to Galveston in 1868, where he died shortly thereafter of yellow fever.
One of his sons, Robert A. Horlock, was 12 years old when, absorbed with the spirit of the times, boarded a blockade runner in Galveston harbor and enlisted as a captain's boy. He remained in this service until the fall of Richmond and Lee's surrender. He then spent a year in the hardware business on the Strand and late in 1871 moved to Navasota, Texas. He became head of the firm of Horlock & Howley, cotton ginners and manufacturers of ice, and also became manager of Schumacher Oil Company and acquired extensive interests in Grimes County and the Brazos Valley. He was one of the founding members, first Sunday School superintendent, and senior warden of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
In 1882, Horlock built a Victorian home at 1215 East Washington St, where it still stands."
