Civil War Union Brigadier General. Commissioned Colonel and commander of the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry at the outbreak of the War. Took command of the First New Jersey Brigade after Gen. Philip Kearny was promoted to divisional command in April 1862, and was promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers on May 9, 1862. He led his command in the Battle of Williamsburg, the Battle of Glendale during the Seven Days and Second Bull Run Campaign. In an action that was a prelude to the Battle of 2nd Bulll Run, his lone brigade encountered Stonewall Jackson's entire Corps near Bull Run Bridge. The vastly superior force routed the First New Jersey Brigade, and General Taylor was mortally wounded (Colonel Alfred T.A. Tobert assumed command after the action). He died a few days after the battle at Alexandria, Virginia. (Additional trivia: "One True Thing," starring Meryl Streep was filmed on the property where he died). His nephew, Captain Archibald Taylor of the 3rd New Jersey Infantry, was killed in the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, and is buried near him. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
