James Hamilton Alexander for many years one of the most prominent farmers of Macon county,died Monday noon at the State hospital in Jacksonville. He had been in failing health for several years and was was sent to the hospital at the at Jacksonville. He was eighty years old last October.
The body will be brought to Decatur tonight and will remain at Dodds Chapel until arrangements for the funeral are made.
James Hamilton Alexander was born Oct.? 1831 in Johnson county, Ind. He came to Macon county in April 1844? and farmed ? his brother took charge of their mothers farm in Whitmore township. They operated the farm until after their mothers death in 1868 when James Alexander purchased his brothers interest in the farm. This farm is still a part of his estate. He cultivated it himself until a few years ago when he retired.
Mr. Alexander married on Oct 17, 1860 Miss Sarah Griffin, Three children were born to them, Joseph Alexander of Chicago, Edgar Alexander of Oklahoma and Ottie Alexander. ? whose wife and William brother, who lives on the homestead. Mrs. Alexander died in 1893.
Mr. Alexander was at one time Highway commissioner and that is the only public office he ever held. He was a member of the Old Settlers Association.
