He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Cpl Green was killed by small arms fire southeast of Sangin district centre, northern Helmand. He was part of a team partnering Afghan National Army soldiers manning a vehicle checkpoint when they came under fire.
Aged 23, from Reading. Cpl Green joined the army at age 16 and completed infantry training in 2004. He progressed quickly and passed the Section Commanders Battle Course to earn promotion to corporal. He deployed to Sangin, Afghanistan in September 2009 and was recently sent with his team to work along with ANA soldiers at a patrol base. "Greeny" was lauded as an outstanding soldier who led by example and was destined for the top. He was also passionate about music and football and was a staunch supporter of Tottenham Hotspur.
Cpl Green is survived by his father Chris, mother Eileen, brother Daniel and sister Charlotte. His family described him as a larger-than-life character. Richard had recently told them: "If anything happens to me, know that I've lived life to the full, have no regrets and love my job."
Funeral with full military honours was held at Reading Minster of St Mary the Virgin Church on March 23, 2010. At Cpl Green's request, he was buried next to the grave of Rfn Cyrus Thatcher.
