Funeral Services for Pvt. William Walter Shumate aged 21, who was killed in Bastone, Belguim, January 3rd 1945, were held Friday at 2 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home with rev. George Jacobs, pastor of the Christian Church.officiating, Burial will be in the Georgetown Cemetery. with Military services by Scott Post No.24, American Legion and Local post of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Casket bearers, Alfred Whitson, Jr., James Jones, Willie Doan, Clarence Gardner, Robert Brooks, and George McFarland.
Pvt Shumate was born in Scott county; a son of Alonzo Shumate and Lola Moore Shumate.of Georgetown, who survive him, He was a member of the Christian church, and attended Garth High School. he entered the Army on April 1, 1943 and recieved his training at Camp Robinson, Arkansas and Fort Benning, Georgia.He was participating in the Normandy invaision and Battle of Bastogne as a member of the 501st Unit of 101st Paratroopers. He was a holder of the Purple Heartand Presidential Citation.
Besided his parents, survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Eula) Gardner,of Georgetown, Mrs. Robert Brooks and Mrs. George McFarland of Scott CO., and Miss Ellen Jean Shumate of Georgetown, a brother Jerald Shumate of Georgetown.
