Known as the "Candy Man," he was born in Canonsburg,Pa to Greek immigrants. He established one of the most successful confectioner establishments in the United States. Beginning more than 50 years ago in his basement, the Sarris empire has since grown to encompass several retail locations, fundraising organizations and catalog and Internet ordering. The main factory and showroom in Canonsburg has become not only a major business endeavor employing more than 350 employees, but also the site of many visitors who come to Sarris Candies for the unusual chocolates, castles of chocolate and famous Sarris Ole Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor, featuring homemade ice cream treats. he was a philanthropist contributing to the Starzl Institute in Pittsburgh and numerous charities. he was awarded the Pennsylvania Small Business Person of the Year in 2001 and being a finalist for the National Small Business Person of the Year presented by President Bush. He had numerous pictures with the rich and famous who came to his store over the years and many of these photos are still on display in his store. He was an icon of the Canonsburg area. Mr. Sarris' proud Greek heritage and upbringing contributed to his dedication to his church and community. He was a member of AHEPA, Leadership 100 and All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. He received the highest layman's recognition in 2002 with an appointment as an Archon of Ecumenical Patriarchate. He died at home March 1, 2010.
