Businessman, Philanthropist. A San Francisco native, Fleishhacker left school at age 14 to begin working at his father's paper box company. In 1907 he became a banker when he was hired as manager of the London, Paris and American Bank. After the bank merged to become Anglo & London Paris National Bank in 1909, he was appointed to the positions of vice-president and manager, and became its president in 1911. In 1932, the bank merged with the Anglo-California Trust Co., run by his brother Mortimer, to become Anglo California National Bank with Herbert serving as president until his forced resignation in 1938. In 1918 Fleishhacker was appointed President of the San Francisco Park and Recreation Commission, a post he would hold for many years. In 1924 he opened the Fleishhacker Pool in San Francisco, famed as the world's largest saltwater swimming pool, which remained in operation until 1971.
