Dr. Helen Bernice Harrold Naugle passed away in Atlanta, Georgia on November 20, 2009.

She was born on August 11, 1920 in West Point, Mississippi where she married her childhood sweetheart, J.B. Naugle. Her education in Eighteenth Century English included a B.S. from the University of Mississippi College for Women, M.S. from the University of Mississippi, and Ph.D. from the University of Alabama.

She had an illustrious career as a teacher in Puerto Rico, Guam, Woodward Academy, and as the first female professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology where she was recognized with numerous awards. She was voted Outstanding Teacher four years in a row and delivered the 1978 commencement address at Georgia Tech. She was also a beloved wife, mother, Bible study leader, volunteer, tutor, gardener, and friend. She strongly supported Georgia Tech student programs including Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, Wesley Foundation, and Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She served as head of the Regents exam committee and presented at international conferences.

Upon retirement she continued to be active in sharing her love for literature and people through teaching at Elderhostel and North Atlanta Senior Services.

She is preceded in her ascension to heaven by her mother, Nancy Helen Weddle Harrold and her father, Judson Nixon Harrold, and is survived by her husband, Jefferson B. Naugle; their daughter, Helen Naugle Deibler; their four granddaughters, Elizabeth Deibler Gadsby, Kathryn Deibler, Nancy Deibler Brannon, and Julie Deibler Bray; and great-grandchildren, Clarkston and Wesley Brannon.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 23 at 11:00 am at St. John UMC in Sandy Springs and a graveside service will be performed on November 28 in West Point, Mississippi. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John UMC or Georgia Tech Wesley Foundation.
