He has gained legendary status in popular culture from his career as a gambler, dentist and occasional gunfighter of the American Western Frontier. Born John Henry Holliday in Griffin, Georgia, his father was a druggist, planter and soldier. He enrolled in dental college in 1870 and on March 1, 1872, graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. Later that year he opened an office in Atlanta, Georgia, but a while later he discovered he had tuberculosis. Because of this malady he was advised to move to a dry climate. After a while on the road he arrived in Tombstone, Arizona sometime in 1880, and participated in the famous October 1881 "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral".
