The son of Charles Smith and Sophia J. Harvey, he appears to have been adopted following the death of his mother. In any case, he moved to the Broome county area and made his home with his aunt Mary Livermore, assuming the Livermore name. He first clerked at a law office in Vestal. He later worked as a stationary engineer. In 1913 he partnered with a Greene in the B.L.E. & U. Express business of parcel delivery in the Broome county area. This business eventually grew into a bus and freight delivery service. At some point in the early 1920's, he disappears from the Binghamton area and his wife appears living in the Walker Sherwood household. In 1930, remarried, he is in Los Angeles county, working as a machinist in the oil fields, an occupation he continued until his death.

His death certificate is a sight to behold, containing both Smith and Livermore as surnames and Lewis/Louis as middle names.

Alternate birth date - Jun. 13 1879, per his death certificate. The date above is from his WWI Draft Registration Card. With the wild variations recorded in the various Censuses, I don't know the truth.
