Sister Susan Jane (Chronister) Bowden was born June 22d., 1845. She embraced religion and joined the M. E. Church South, when about fifteen years of age; Married to John Wesley Bowden Nov. 19th 1863; died at Rising Star, Eastland County Texas, April 9th 1886. She died far away from her old home and friends in Arkansas, but she had no lack of friends in Texas, for all who live as she did, will have plenty of friends anywhere they go. It was sad to see her bereaved husband and nine weeping children, bow together around her lifeless form at the grave, and here them say "Mother farewell." But the gloom and sadness of the scene was gone when through their glistening tears they looked up and said, "we will soon meet the dear one in Heaven."
Sister Bowden was a great sufferer, but having lived the life of a Christian was enabled to die well. Among the last things she said to us was, "Oh that blessed home."
In her death the Church and community of Rising Star lost one of their purest members. Her funeral was preached by her pastor to one of the largest and most attentive congregations that ever assembled in the town. Let us remember the bereaved ones at the throne of grace. May God help them to meet her in Heaven. A. K. Miller, Pastor (Arkansas Methodist, Obituaries)
