From Old Chapel Cemetery 1906 records:
DR. CHARLES CARTER BYRD of "Chapel Hill," son of Capt. Thomas T. and Mary Armistead Byrd of "The Cottage." He built "Chapel Hill" and lived there.
"In the grave beneath are deposited the mortal remains of Charles Carter Byrd who departed this life Dec. 14th, 1829, aged 30, cut off in the midst of his days and the exertion of manly ambition. As a Physician, successful and tender in the discharge of his duties, as a Friend beloved, as a Father devoted, as a Husband seldom equaled. She for whom he joined the tenderest names dedicates this marble to his memory, as a sad but heart felt testimony of love and respect. Thus do human hopes perish."
