Death: Feb. 14, 1881

Civil War New York City Mayor, US Congressman. Served as Mayor of New York City from 1854 to 1858, and Congressman from New York from 1863 to 1865 and 1867 to 1881. A Northern Radical who did not support the Civil War, he tried to have New York City declared a "free city", which would have allowed it to continue to trade with the South. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
