Chase Wilmot Kennedy was born at Portsmouth, Ohio on January 4, 1859 to Milton and Josephine Kennedy. He graduated from West Point Military Academy Class of 1883. He was commissioned 2nd Lieut. and assigned to the 3rd Infantry and was posted at Fort Missoula in Montana. At the outbreak of World War I he had been with the General Staff Corps at the War College in Washington, D.C. He was promoted to Major General in 1917 and was assigned as the Commanding General of Camp Dix Training Camp in New Jersey. He was then transferred to Camp Custer, Michigan as Commanding General of the 85th Division. It was with this division that he sailed to France with in July 1918. The 85th Division took part in the battles of Saint Mihiel, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and the Marbache Sector. After the war, Major General Kennedy was assigned at Quarry Heights in the Panama Canal Zone before retiring in 1922 with almost 40 years of service. He and his wife Elizabeth lived in Washington D.C. where he passed away on November 23, 1936.
