It seemed a natural thing to do when J.A. remarried and brought home his new bride, Emma. The family seemed complete again. J.A. and Emma brought two more sons into the family, and all those boys were difficult to manage. The eldest son ran off to join the railroad at 16, and the next oldest son decided to work his way through pharmacy school in Galveston upon graduation from high school in Crockett. Little by little, the other boys from the union of J.A. and Margaret Ann all left the farm to attend pharmacy school too.
All three sons Carl, Jehu and Roy became successful pharmacists, married, and made good lives.
J.A.'s health began to suffer and after several months of illness, he died at his home west of Crockett on the Alabama Road on December 5, 1919 at the age of 61. He had outlived his own father by eleven years. Of his nine children, six survived him.
J.A. was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Crockett. After a funeral service conducted by Rev. S.F. Tenney and Rev. C.B. Garrett, he was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Crockett next to his beloved Margaret Ann.
