Thomas L. Pendergraft, 89, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Kevin Deckard officiating, Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.

Mr. Pendergraft was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Canadian. He was the eldest child of Florence Patterson Pendergraft and Thomas Lafate Pendergraft Sr. He graduated from Canadian High School and began work with Santa Fe Railroad in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 during World War II, at which time he transferred to the U.S. Army Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of second lieutenant and 1,500 hours of flying time.

He met his future wife, Glenn Madeline Randall, in Canadian, and returned to work for Santa Fe Railroad. Tom and Glenn had three children: Lynn, Garey and Dee. Glenn died an untimely death at the age of 42 in Amarillo.

Tom met his current wife, Betty, at Polk Street United Methodist Church, where both of their children attended. They were married at the church on Aug. 8, 1971, and all six of their children participated in the wedding. That day, Betty's children, Dick, Leigh and Susan, became part of the Pendergraft family. Leigh died in 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Pendergraft; five children and their spouses, Dick and Patricia Baucum of China, Lynn and Bob Newman of Houston, Garey and Rhonda Pendergraft of Amarillo, Dee and Doug Sauve of Austin and Susan and Mitchell McIntire of Oklahoma City; a brother, Jack Pendergraft and wife Marcia of Amarillo; a sister, Nila and husband Royce Hunter of Lubbock; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all of the doctors, nurses and staff at the Veterans Administration hospital in Amarillo for all of their compassion, help and understanding in the final days of Tom's life.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265, or to Baptist Mid-Mission, P.O. Box 308011, Cleveland, OH 44130-8011 in missions account of Richard Baucum.
