Hamby, 29, died of head injuries. His car and that of Axel Nyberg of Topeka collided on the straightaway in front of the grandstand. Hamby's car rolled over several times and was demolished. He was driving a supermodified at the time. Nyberg was released after treatment for minor bruises.
Chet Hamby had moved from Texas to the Kansas City area around 1949, living at 3209 Peery Avenue. He competed in modified stocks and IMCA sprint cars. He was driving a supermodified sprint car at the Mid-Western Fairgrounds track in Topeka, Kansas, when his car collided with that of Axel Nyberg of Topeka on the front stretch and overturned multiple times. Hamby died of head injuries at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka; Nyberg was treated for contusions and released.
Chet is survived by his parents, Chester Grover and Mayful Viola (Gravis) Hamby; wife, Frances Pauline (Hartman) Hamby; and 4 young children, Teresa, Derrill, Paula, and Ronda.
