Jazz Musician. Real name John Edwin Hanna. Influenced by Gene Krupa, the Boston native started playing the drums while a teenager. He began his career during the late-1940s performing with local Boston musicians which led to an opportunity to work with the Ted Weems Orchestra. Following service in the United States Air Force, he returned establishing himself as a drummer of high-standing quality as he worked with Harry James, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Maynard Ferguson during the 1950s and 1960s. His most accomplished period was while with the Woody Herman Orchestra from 1962 until 1964, and as a member of the studio band for the Merv Griffin Show from 1964 until 1975. He co-led a music group with trombonist Carl Fontana, recording with Concord Records. In addition, he was known for his work with the music group Supersax. He died from complications of bone marrow disease. (bio by: C.S.)
