William was the son of John Knuckles & Jane Bray. He married about 1869 and settled in Rockcastle Co, KY for a number of years before moving on to Garrard County. He and his wife, Samantha Frances Lambert, had a small family with three children: (1) Nancy J., aka "Nannie" (2) James and (3) Martha. William's youngest daughter, Martha, died in 1884 at the age of eight. His wife, Frances, died several years later in 1910. Frances and Martha are buried at Fairview Cemetery in Rockcastle County.
After Frances' death, William moved to Rockholds in Whitley County. There he married Jane Rice in 1918. William remained in Whitley County where he died in 1924. Interestingly, William outlived his two remaining children, Nancy and James. He also buried his two grandsons, Loarn R. Byrd and Thirston B. Knuckles. Per his death certificate, William is buried in Corn Creek Cemetery where his two grandsons are interred. Although headstones mark the graves of Loarn and Thirston, no monument exists for William's final resting place. It is believed his grave is located in the same row as his grandsons.
