KIN OF ALAMO COURIER DIES

Mrs. Bargsley, 77, Was Granddaughter Of Travis Messenger

Mrs. Marcella Malinda Bargsley--granddaughter of the courier who carried the
last message from the Alamo before its fall in March, 1836 -- died early today
at her home, 3117 Fairmount. She was 77.

Her grandfather was John W. Smith, one of the soldiers under the command of Col. Wm. B. Travis. Just before Santa Anna's Mexicans stormed the old mission, Mr. Smith slipped out under cover of darkness, carrying in his pocket a message addressed to Col. James W. Fannin, asking him to send help from Goliad.
The message--which was one of the "victory-or-death" types that Travis wrote while besieged, reached its destination too late to bring help to the martyrs of Texas liberty.
Mrs. Bargsley had lived in Fort Worth 21 years. She was born in Travis County, and came here from Austin.
Funeral services will be at Harveson & Cole Funeral Chapel at 5 p.m. tomorrow with Rev. L.D. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, T.A.J. Bargsley; two sons, W.H. and Verman Bargsley, both of Fort Worth; six daughters, Mrs. J.C. Skaggs, Mrs. R. H. Henry, Mrs. W. H. Bonte, Mrs. J.E. Reinli, and Miss Sadie Bargsley, all of Fort Worth; and Mrs. Sam Glasser, Tucson, Ariz.; a brother W. F. Smith, Marble Falls; one sister, Mrs. J.C. Bargsley, Coleman; 11 grandsons and seven granddaughters.
