| Birth: | Feb. 14, 1824 | | Death: | Feb. 9, 1886 |  Civil War Union Major General. One of the most successful and lauded Corps commanders in the Union Army. Rose from commanding a brigade in the II Corps to commanding the Corps itself. Organized the Union defenses on Cemetery Hill on July 1, 1863 after Confederate Troops pushed the Union defenders back and the two senior Union Generals in the scene were squabbling about command. Held his position on the second day of the battle, and commanded the Union center that repulsed Pickett's Charge in the 3rd day, where he was wounded, but would not leave the field. As commander of the military district of Washington DC in July 1865, he was the presiding officer at the execution of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. He was one of only 16 Union General to receive the Thanks of Congress in the war. Democratic candidate for the US presidency in 1880 against Garfield.
