He founded the Prudential Life Insurance Company in Newark, New Jersey in 1875, and helped build it into a mulit-million dollar company. He was elected as a Senator from New Jersey to the United States Senate to fill the vacany caused by the death of Senator William J. Sewell, and served from 1902 to 1907. It was alleged he used his money and power to influence votes to make him Senator.
