On November 17, 1864, 1st Lt. Alfred F. Bemis, age 32, of Co. K, 26th Michigan was honorably discharged for disability. He had enlisted from Pentwater with the "Lake Shore Tigers" as a Sergeant in Co. A. and had been promoted through the ranks. He had also served as a recruiting officer during the war on a visit back to Oceana County. Bemis would be listed living at Muskegon in an 1883 reunion program for the 26th Michigan and in 1887 also attended the 22nd Annual Reunion held in Muskegon. He died in June of 1898 and was buried in the Woodmere Cemetery at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. His 26th Michigan service included: Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, Petersburg including Deep Bottom, Ream's Station, Cedar Level Station, White Oak Swamp & Hatcher's Run, & Fort Fisher.
