Mr. Bartee died Wednesday, September 26 at his residence. He was born December 11, 1924 in Montalba, Texas to Jim Camel and Olivia Hodges Bartee. He married his wife of 62 years, January 7, 1945. Mr Bartee attended Elkhart Public Schools. He served in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion during WWII. He was a charter member and Deacon of the Grapeland Missionary Baptist Church, Mayor of Grapeland for 19 years, served on the Board of Directors at the First State Bank, Grapeland for over 30 years. He served on the school board for Grapeland Independent School District and the Grapeland Volunteer Fire Department. He was instrumental in helping to bring Nucor Vulcraft Corporation to Grapeland and was awarded Houston County Man of the Year for his accomplishments. Early in his career, he was employed by Geier Jackson Inc. and L. H. Moon Company . An entrepreneur, he later formed his own company, George Bartee Construction Company. He has owned and operated this company since 1965 until present, chiefly serving oilfield and excavation services industries.
Mr. Bartee was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Nolan Buchanan, Coy Lee Bartee and J. C. Bartee. He is survived by his wife, Thelda Meador Bartee of Grapeland; his daughter, Mona Karen Bridges and husband, Dick of Grapeland; granddaughter, Lindsey Bridges Bullock, Jr.; and husband, Rodney Bullock, Jr.; grandsons, Gregory Brian Bridges and wife, Shelly, Jason Michael Bridges and wife. April, Brandon Ryan Bridges and wife Jessica; five great grandchildren, Brian, Kalea, Madison, Ben and Jaycee Bridges.
