In the 1900 federal census, Samuel and his family were living in Mt. Tabor, Multnomah County, Oregon. He was listed as, S. M. Chase, a musician, age 59, born November 1840 in New York, and his wife, L. J. Chase, age 53, born May 1847, in Ohio, and a daughter, E. Chase, a factory laborer, age 14, born August 1885, in Nebraska, and a son, W. M. Chase, age 11, born June 1888 in Nebraska.
In the 1910 federal census, Samuel was living alone in Portland Ward 8, Multnomah County, Oregon. He was listed as, Samuel M. Chase, a sailor, a widow, age 70, born in New York.
