ROCK PORT, Mo. — Elsie H. Hurtig, 96, of Rock Port, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2010, at a Tarkio care center.
Elsie was born on May 26, 1913, in Irene, S.D.
After graduating from high school, she married Arthur E. Oakland, and they adopted a son, Richard. Arthur passed away a few years later.
On September 9, 1939, she married Gustav Arnold Hurtig in Hartington, Neb. They moved to Tarkio, Mo., in 1940, and a few years later bought their farm near Rock Port. Elsie and Arnold adopted a second son, Robert, who was born in 1945. Arnold passed away in 1987.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Erick and Ingrid (Morkin) Anderson; son, Richard; five brothers, and three sisters.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Marie (Blake) Hurtig of Rock Port; grandson, Erick Oakland of Sugarland, Texas; granddaughters: Theresa Oakland of Montana; and Dana and her husband, Dale Grubbs, of Thomaston, Maine; great-grandchildren, Logan and Kasey Grubbs; daughter-in-law, Mary Oakland of Zavalla, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elsie was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church of Westboro, Mo.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. John's Lutheran Church, Westboro. Interment: St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
A memorial has been established at Bank Midwest for a rescue and care facility for cats and dogs, in recognition of Elsie's love for small animals.
