Daughter of United States Congressman William Wallace Irwin and Sophia Arabella Bache Irwin. She was born in Washington, DC, while her father was serving in Congress.

Granddaughter of Richard Bache Jr.

Great-granddaughter of Richard Bache and Sarah Franklin Bache.

Great-great granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin.

She founded the Agnes Irwin School in 1869 in Philadelphia and was the first dean of Radcliffe College. The Agnes Irwin School still exists today as an all-girl, non-sectarian, day school for PreK-Grade 12.
