27th Massachusetts Governor. He served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1861 to 1865. A staunch supporter of the Union war effort during the Civil War, he facilitated the raising of thousands of troops for the Union, including the celebrated all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
