Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 29 May 1953
"Herbert R. Delfs, 69, of Canfield, died of a cerebral hemorrhage Saturday evening in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada, where he had spent a week fishing with a group of Youngstown friends. When the men returned to their hotel about 7 p.m. after spending the day on Buckhorn Lake, Mr. Delfs complained of a headache and went to his room. Half an hour later, one of his associates found him dead in his bed. Born in Canfield January 1, 1884, he was a son of John and Ida Tanner Delfs, and his entire life was spent here. Following his graduation from the old North Eastern Ohio Normal college in 1902, Mr. Delfs was employed for two years in Pittsburgh and Niles, and then became associated in a hide, coal, building supply and feed business which his father founded in 1885. It is one of the oldest concerns in the area. He remained with the firm until his retirement last September. The business is now operated by Roy J. Delfs, his son, Gilbert, and the latter's son-in-law, Leonard Gagliardi. Another brother, Harry E. Delfs, retired from the firm 10 years ago. Mr. Delfs was chairman of the board of the recently re-organized Tippecanoe Country Club; a 45-year member of Argus Masonic Lodge of Canfield, which he served as Master in 1912; several Youngstown Masonic bodies; Lake Erie Consistory, 32nd degree, and Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland; Youngstown Lodge of Elks and the Canfield Presbyterian church. Besides his wife, the former Ethel Templin of Calla, whom he married Dec. 12, 1910, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Sam Mann Ewing (Dr. Genevieve Delfs) of Youngstown and Miss Maxine Delfs of Fairbanks, Alaska; four sisters, Mrs. J. Carl Zimmerman of Oberlin; Mrs. Hugh M. Bowman of Ellsworth, and Misses Helena and Emma, Delfs of Canfield two brothers, Roy J. and Harry E. of Canfield, and two granddaughters. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Harold W. Kaser, were held Wednesday afternoon in the Canfield Presbyterian church and burial in the village cemetery."

I was always happy to see you. Thanks for all those crisp new one dollar bills that you gave to me. Quite a treat for a little girl!
