Luke was born and raised in Cisco, Texas where his great-grandfather, William T., had settled the Swindle family from Georgia in the mid 1800's.

Luke was the oldest of four children. His siblings were Etna Swindle Holt, John Wesley Jr. (died in infancy), and Elsie Mae Swindle Kindred.

While attending his sisters' softball game, he met twin girls Mina and Elaine Holt on the opposing team from Strawn. He told his family he was going to marry one of those twins. Luke asked Elaine out first but decided that was not the twin for him. He and Mina married on October 20, 1934.

Luke served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a "SeaBee", Construction Battalion. He worked the Texas oil fields after the war, travelling with his family all over the state. At one point, either before or shortly after his oil field days, he and his wife Mina owned a dairy farm outside of Cisco. Luke and Mina built a home overlooking lake Cisco in 1950 with a dock on the lake. He built a Fina gas station in town on main street; the station facade was built to look like a WWII quonset hut.

Their children were Rexford Dale Swindle, John Elden Swindle (died in infancy), Janice Louise Swindle Casey, and Donna Elaine Swindle (died in infancy).

Luke and Mina were avid hunters and fishermen. He and Mina ran the gas station until her death in 1976. Not wanting to live in their lake house without Mina, Luke moved his airstream trailer to the gas station until the house sold.

Years later, Luke married life-long family friend Lucy Ray and lived out his retirement years with her in Cisco.
